I've been doing the same thing recently. I've noticed fewer scratches, but
about the same amount of dust.
What I really like is the money savings from not having prints made. This
is particularly true when I shoot APS (I prefer medium format, but I can't
carry my Kiev 88 in my jacket pocket! (without looking like a dork ;-) )).
Using viewscan, I can scan the entire APS roll unattended with my Scan Multi
II and get a "contact sheet" from which I can decide which images should be
scanned and printed.
Love that viewscan!!!

Subject: Re: filmscanners: Scratched Negs & Home C-41 processing
In the last few months I've been having my C41 film processed, cut and
sleeved without getting prints made. Since I started doing this I have
found a significant reduction in the number of scratches on my negatives.
It seems that many of the scratches may be introduced while printing. When
I get them home I plop the plastic page with the negatives on my lightbox
and decide which to scan. By the way, without prints it only costs me $1.99
a roll to get my film processed.
