        Ed is probably correct ... but I don't blame you, and I don't know
why your service refused or objected to your request.

        I happen to have JPEG saving software, which is capable of showing
me, while varying the JPEG setting, not only the result along with the
original, but also showing me a difference image.  While differences
can be insignificant, there is always a difference ... even for 100%
quality! ... and in fact, the difference image actually shows (me
anyway) more insignificant differences at settings near 92-95%.  Such
quality differences vary with image detail, and your service should
have honored your request.

        Regarding "color loss", you should have also asked your service to
scan into a wide gamut color space or leave it in the scanner's device
space.  For example, if he scanned it into sRGB, then you are losing
some color information ... however, loss of color information is not
due to JPEG compression.
