No, they are not the norm.  I think you are asking for trouble shipping any
large item (like a monitor, or a Leafscan ;-) without the original shipping
container and packing, or even shipping them at all.  If the seller is a
professional, than you stand a good chance of getting it packed correctly.
If the seller is a private person, then your odds decrease substantially
IMO.

I have had over 300+ transactions on eBay, and have very very little
shipping trouble at all.  I do not buy monitors over eBay, unless they are
from a local seller.  The only damaged item I had was an Epson 3000 that was
packed incorrectly, but FedEx did pay for the damages with no problem at
all.  The next 3000 I bought locally.
