I'm not exactly sure how long ago I bought Vuescan, but for US$40 I've received
every update for free, can send bug reports directly to the author and support
is free. Even if Ed never wrote another version of the program I have an
existing one which produces better scans than the OEM software. Compare
this with buying say a copy of Windows ME. It costs me about US$100, and
for that I get no support other than online bug fixes which I have to find
first to be able to apply, and when the next version comes out it wil probably
cost me another US$100 to buy. Granted Windows ME is far more complex than
Vuescan, but $40 for a perpetual license to an excellent piece of software
with free updates and support is a bargain IMO.
If it wasn't for Vuescan, I would have trashed my LS30 long ago.
