I did some tests last night with a Stouffer 21-step wedge and found some interesting results!
The Canon FS4000 managed a Dmax of 1.8 in auto exposure and 2.1 if I cranked up the exposure to max (but then the scan looked REALLY bad).
My Epson 1640 Photo did much better, 2.7 - 3.0 depending on target (35mm, 120 & 4x5).
I've been in contact with two other people that have the same problem with this scanner, so I'm not sure if I dare to send it back for a replacement or if I should abandon Canon scanners altogether and get a Nikon IV ED instead.
