I was unimpressed with the results I got when scanning silver based B&W
films with the LS30.  I didn't persist very long!  I could make much more
headway using T400CN or scanning colour films, so that's mostly what I've
been doing.

The collimated lightsource in the Nikon seems to highlight the grain in
silver based films.
