I have a couple of machines fitted with Adaptec 2904CD PCI SCSI cards.
These are dirt cheap (20GBP), marketed for attaching CDR's, but in fact
are bog standard SCSI2 without a boot ROM socket. The Plug and Play
works, and they are recognised by W98, needing no special drivers - the OS
finds the card and it works from then on. They work well with the SS4000
and all other scanners I have tried. Using a higher spec card won't
improve scan speed, it will just increase cost and cabling difficulties.

If you have a faster SCSI controller for disks, it is still better to add
one of these cards.

I have used a variety of other SCSI cards at different times, ranging from
ancient Adaptec ISA 15nn's to IBM/Future Domain PCMCIA card in a laptop.
Never had a SCSI problem with any scanner.
