After you get the best scan you can with the most detail then I recommend
you use contrast masking to bring out the shadow detail that is in the scan.
  It works really well and has made a huge improvement to some of my images.

By the way, the tutorial is for Photoshop but you can do the same thing with
Paint Shop Pro.
