To be a bit more specific, you can scan at 16-bit depth and Elements will open
the image but will convert it automatically to 8-bit depth.

One thing that Photoshop LE has over Elements: If you get the Minolta
Dimage Scan Elite II, it does not support 16-bit depth with Elements, while
it does with LE.
Anything else better about LE?
