[filmscanners] Output Size

I usually scan to make 12.25x18.5 inch prints.  I scan at 4000dpi.  I set my
output to the size I will be printing at and to 300dpi.  This makes for
fairly large files of about 50-60M.  Is it necessary to make scans at the
output size and resolution one will ultimately be printing at, or can one
make them any size and resolution and size them up in Photoshop ³Image Size²
before printing?
