If I were you I'd keep the replacement.

Any and all companies can produce a defective unit.  I'm sure Leicas have
come with out of wack rangefinders and I personally know a person who had to
lemon-law a Toyota (and saw others lemon-law Mercedes when I worked at a
dealer in college).

If you're primary use for this drive is to archive digital images, the
prices on dvd-rw drives will be coming down soon and you'll want one of
those anyway.
