One of my dictionaries states:
Woods- a large, thick growth of trees, smaller than a forest, but larger
than a grove.
However, other than the word usage, I agree that patterned, non-random
elements create artifacts which our analogue based vision finds
distracting. We like random elements and we prefer random noise to
patterned, as well.
