The twain software can be used with other software - the photoshop version is
presumably optimised in some way for PS.
You could run the twain interface in one application whilst image processing
other images in PS. The main problem with this is purchasing the other software.
I can't remember if Irfanview supports 16bit processing, but I think it
supports twain. It's available free on the net have a look.

Otherwise I don't know if it would work but you could try using the twain
driver in an old version of PS (if you have it) whilst processing in 6.0/7.0 .
There may be some nasty interaction - it also has a large footprint - Irfanview
is very efficient.
