Thanks for your questions Julian--
You guys may have to wait a bit before I'll be doing any experiments with a
glass carrier. I suspect that either:
a) the outside of the glass is out of focus and the defects won't be noticed
so Digital ICE will only work on the four (glass touching each side of the
film and both sides of film) inner surfaces or
b) they will be in focus and Digital ICE will correct for defects on all of
the six surfaces.
The engineer I talked to just said it would work. We didn't go into details.
If anyone else has a glass carrier on a Digital ICE equipped scanner and has
the time to experiment, maybe they can report to the group!

Could you clarify this? Do you mean the ICE can only correct for surface
defects on one or both of the outside glass surfaces?
And, by your omission, should we infer that ICE does not correct defects
on the two inside surfaces of the glass elements (that is, on the sides
facing the film)?
Do the glass layers reduce the effectiveness of ICE in removing defects
on the film itself?
Certainly, someone at ASF must have tested these issues.
