Thanks for all the advice. Looks like Canon is not a good choice. I
have heard good things about even the first model SS4000 but there is
no ice after all. Would a nikon IV be a better choice for me even if
I shoot b+w? I am also interested in build quality!

The biggest problem with the Nikon 4000ED is the non-diffused LED
lighting will emphasize grain, dust dirt and scratches. This is in
fact
why Nikon had dICE incorporated into their scanners, and it does a
darn
good job of correcting those defects, except, it does not work on
true
black and white film.
It is fine for chromogenic black and white (C-41 process) but it will
be
problematical for true B&W, causing a lot of spotting work. Further
still, the IV, being 2900 dpi is more apt to produce grain aliasing.
