[filmscanners] Re: OT: which wintel OS for digital imaging?

Dave,

Your experience is the opposite of mine; I think XP Pro is great. As I said
in an earlier posting today though, the only two programs that have crashed
XP were Norton Utilities 2002 (XP version!) and Easy CD creater 5. I got rid
of both and used System Restore to return the Registry etc to the state it
was in before their installation, and everything has been fine since. So I
would recommend getting shot of Norton - you don't really need it on XP. My
Nikon 4000 and Epson 1200 scanners both work fine with the latest driver
updates, as do my Epson printers.

Bob Frost.

It could be just my bad luck buying a Sony laptop with XP Home just after MS
decided to "fix" XP (the security issues primarily, as I understand it). XP
phones home on a regular basis and I dutifully installed the "essential"
upgrades recommended by MS. All I can tell you is this is the least stable
OS I have *ever* seen, it freezes and crashes -A LOT- much more than
Win 98 ever did in my experience. The utilities I'm using have improved
things considerably (Norton and System Mechanic), but it's still very wonky
IMO, just too much crap and bloat. I've heard XP Pro is much better -
almost as good as Win2K:)

I recently upgraded my 2 1/2 year old Dell box from Win 98 original ed to
Win 2000, and I am very impressed with Win 2K. I like it best of any OS
I've used so far.
