[filmscanners] Problems with Nikon LS-30 and SA-20 film strip feeder

I have a Nikon LS-30 with the SA-20 motorised feeder.  I get an
intermittent problem whereby -

-       I put a strip of film in the feeder,

-       It draws it in as usual,

-       After the film has disappeared nasty cracking noises are heard (sounds a
bit like film being shredded - though I haven't found any damage to films
so far),

-       VueScan, which is set up to start scanning as soon as film is put in the
feeder, doesn't recognise that the film is there,

-       The "Eject" button on VueScan doesn't work either.  The only way to get
the film out of the feeder is to remove the feeder from the scanner and
reinsert it.  At this point, the film is ejected.

-       If I put the film in again, everything may be OK, the same can happen
again, or I get an intermediate situation where I get the noise but the
film is scanned.

I have tried opening the feeder using the big handy screw on the top.  I
suspect that the problems are tied in with the bits of white plastic at the
back of the feeder that are used to coil the film.  Perhaps it is to do
with what position they start off in (there seem to be multiple choices)
and how free they are to rotate (they seem to catch as they turn).

Can anyone offer any advice please ?
