It can also have something to do with film and developing... Did you use a
tripod (not that you need to, but if you are doing critical testing like
this, you might want to consider it, with mirror pre-release etc.).
Of course the scanner hardware has a significant effect...but the scanners
you are comparing seem to be pretty decent scanners!
