Been a while since my last design with samplers in it
but there was a buzzword for the sampling time (that
S/H circuits try to make short).  Something like
"sampling aperture" or the like.  Scanners have
wide aperture averaging samplers.  So although the
quality/nature of the sampler is different, a scanner's
sensor fits into the traditional framework.  IMO
