It could still be something blocking the CCD, but it does sound like the CCD
itself is broken. Just bad luck, I guess--although my LS-2000 had a problem
with the stepper motor or something when I first got it (but apparently a
lot of LS-2000s had that problem initially--not that it's any excuse for a
defect, of course).

Thank you for your reply. The line is about 30 pixels wide. I get dark
pixels (same colour as the scan but darker), then lighter pixels and then
darker pixels again. They all follow straight lines (no fuzziness) but are
very difficult to clone out.

I'll take the scanner in the nearest service centre.
