[filmscanners] RE: Vuescan-Adjusting Color Balance
very well, in part, that is why I said "it depends." :-) I noted that my
answer was based on Photoshop and not how a scanner samples for starters. I
did this intentionally taking my cue from the origianal post which mentioned
specifically "3x3" samples. I also said "it depends" based on the fact that
within Photoshop, like you note, one can also have a 5x5 matrix (other
software may allow variable settings)

For Photoshop, this is adjustable, in the toolbar. You can set the
eyedropper to sample a single pixel, or the average of a 3x3 or 5x5 matrix
of samples around the click point.
In any case, this feature has nothing to do with how a scanner samples raw
data. It is simply a design choice for one feature of the user interface in
an image editing program.
