Try multiscanning, if your equipment allows.   I use Vuescan and do this for
the very same reason--- dark slides show lines in them.  Multiscanning does
wonders for this.  (I generally use 8X multiscanning, for good images, and
3X just to see what's on the slide (under the noise))

Thank you for the information.

I've been scanning mostly slide strips. I've always had problems in the dark
areas in the form of greenish stripes (which BTW seems to be a major flaw of
this scanner according to what I've read), but recently these stripes became
more obvious. That's why I decided to recalibrate the scanner. But if the
scanner is self calibrating, than the problem has to be something else.
