While I understand and can accept that not all compressed formats can handle
bit errors resulting in a loss of image, I have to wonder about the
assertion that "most photographs are compressed." While no doubt many are,
I think it questionable that the figure of archived photographs - let alone
unarchived ones -would come anywhere near comprising most.

You gotta be kidding. If it were written perfectly there wouldn't be any
need to have error correction codes.
