I use the Nikon LS4000 with SF Ai 6.01r19 together with the IT8 module and I
get perfect scans from my Fuji Sensia slides. The quality of my scans even
got better with the IT8 target on Fuji film made by Wolf Faust on
http://www.coloraid.de. If you want some idea of my results just go to my
folder http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=244587 and have a look.
Silverfast is not cheap compared to Vuescan, I admit, and has some steep
learning curve, but from my experience it is a very powerfull tool and
surely worth the 65$ upgrade fee if you already have SF Ai 5.5.
And yes it is possible to scan in 48 bit without using HDR. There is even
much much more. For that just have a look at
http://www.silverfast.com/highlights/en.html
Just to assure you I'm not in any way involved in those companies and just
an advanced but pationated photographer....

Yes, I'd like to know, too. Have they finally got around to supporting more
than 8-bit scans, without using HDR?
