[filmscanners] RE: Carriers for Epson 2450
Hello All!
Have completed manufacture of my first "magnetic carrier" for 6x7 cm.
Made a template in Photoshop and taped it to the stack of two mag
sheets. Cut it out VERY carefully with a matte knife and straightedge on
my analog (sic) drafting board. It is fairly easy to get the film in the
right place, and the sheets hold it quite firmly. Flatness appears to
the eye about the same as a Beseler metal (glassless) carrier. Scans are
excellent, although I think I need to experiment with shims under the
"carrier" to get maximum sharpness.
IMPORTANT POINT! With the 2450, it is necessary to either cut a notch in
the top of the carrier to match that on the OEM plastic, or to position
the carrier about 1/2 inch from the top of the copyglass to allow the
scanner to do its pre-calibration before each scan. This is critical! It
is also important not to leave more than 1/2-3/4 inch open at the top.
It appears from my initial work that too large a calibration opening
causes exposure errors.
More details as I do more scanning. Got a couple great 8x10 prints
already. Many thanks to Andrew for posting this idea.
