My 2c worth:

It can also be power supply -- I had similar problems that were solved by
fitting a larger (and still more expensive) one.

350 watt supply (Topower, not a cheap brand) should have been big enough --
wasn't.

Now running 420W -- note lots of 'box shifters' cut costs by using cheap
P/S's and Athlon systems, in particular, don't like them much (my system is
a 1.33 with 1G RAM and far too many devices installed.)

Some video cards (G-force etc.) can also play up on you, particularly if
your power supply is marginal.

I assume you've carefully checked all cable connections etc., for looseness
and corrosion?
