I found that Adobe Gamma did not work particularly well for me even as a
simple setup because the criteria for picking the "smallest black level
above full black" was so subjective. After using this I found by using a
simple step wedge that my monitor was badly set up, so now I use the step
wedge itself to set up, or one of a couple of gamma testers that are on the
web.
I think the step wedge is the simplest and best way to check your black and
white levels, and it gives you some idea about gamma too, if you aim to get
the brightness "steps" about the same size at the dark end, the middle and
the bright end. I've used it to set up many monitors and it seems to be
consistently good at getting things right. The most common problem I find
is that people have their monitors set so that the top few steps or the
bottom few steps are invisible, i.e. they are missing a good proportion of
the available range.
Don't forget the interesting and often ignored fact that once you set up
your monitor, you should use the CONTRAST control for day to day changes to
suit light levels etc, never the BRIGHTNESS control. The brightness should
remain fixed once you have adjusted the screen, so take a note of the
setting. This is because brightness sets the black level, while contrast
sets the gain - kind of counter intuitive.
I also have a page talking about black/white screen setup with some links
including two useful gamma testers that are much better than Adobe's. Even
Timmo's page has a good gamma tester, see ...

One day I'll learn about full CM but at the moment I seem to be getting by
fine with my simple approach.
