Your Computer
What processor do you use?
(i.e. Intel Pentium IV 1000, G4 450, etc.)
DJL: Dell Intel, 2.0 GHz, 1GB.
What operating system do you use?
(i.e. Windows 2000, Mac OS 9, etc.)
DJL: Win 2K
How much memory do you have?
(i.e. 512 MB, 1 GB, etc.)
DJL: 1GB
What image editor do you use?
(i.e. Gimp 1.3.18, Paint Shop Pro 8.0, Photoshop Elements 2.0, etc.)
DJL: Picture Window Pro, Photoshop 7.0
Image Scanning
What percentage of your scans come from film or prints?
(i.e. 90% film-10% prints, 20% film-80% prints, etc.)
DJL: 100% film.
What are the typical pixel dimensions of your scans?
(i.e. 3000x2000, 6000x4000, etc.)
DJL: 8745 x 6185 (645 cropped to a 1:1.414 aspect ratio: paper in Japan is
A-series), although I usually downsample to 50% (25% pixel count) or 60%
(36% pixels count) of that for editing/printing.
What percentage of your scans start as 16 bits per channel scans?
(i.e. 100%, 20%, etc.)
DJL: 100%
If you scan at 16 bits do you convert to 8 bits before printing?
(yes, no)
DJL: I scan in 16 bit into Picture Window Pro, and do cropping, curves, and
color correction in 16-bit, and save as an 8-bit jpeg (yes, heresy, but 4000
dpi scans simply don't have enough information in them to justify saving as
tiff; they're soft and noisy as compared to direct digital capture). I then
do most editing in Photoshop.
Are 16 bit per channel Photoshop compatible plug-ins important to you?
(very important, important, not important)
DJL: Very important. Complicated editing should be done in 16-bits to
prevent quantization errors.
Digital Cameras
What are the typical pixel dimensions of your digital camera images?
(i.e. 1600x1200, 3000x2000, etc.)
DJL: 2560 x 1920 (Sony F707). although that may change to 3000 x 2000 (Canon
300D)
What percentage of the time do you capture
16 bit images with your digital camera?
(i.e. 0%, 50%, 100%, etc.)
DJL: 0% now, and I'm not sure whether or not I'd use RAW with the 300D if I
get one. But I still need 16-bits in my plugins to prevent quantization
errors.
