[filmscanners] RE: SS 4000 Questions
Answers
I don't believe the lamp shut-off software in Polacolor's Insight software
ever worked. A Polaroid person here told us a couple years ago that the lamp
was good for something like 10,000 hr and not to worry about it being on.
Just don't leave your slide under the lamp for long periods of time.
Banshee noises are a feature, not a flaw <laugh>. Yes, it makes weird
noises.
Yes, it feels like you have to push too hard to get the carrier in. Just
introduce it far enough until you feel it engage and grab. You can use
software controls to eject the carrier.
No way to shut the front door. You have to make a dust cover. I suggest
either an old pillow case, or better yet, a large shoe box, inverted, with a
cutout for the cables in the back. The thing sucks dust up faster that a
vacuum cleaner, so keep it covered.

Subject: [filmscanners] SS 4000 Questions
Hi!
>>After my LS-2000 went west, I managed to pick up a refurb Polaroid SS-4000
on ebay for $300 US. It is working very well, but I have a few questions.
First, does the lamp have an auto shut off feature, or should I be very
careful to shut the scanner off so as to conserve the lamp? It appears that
the lamp stays on for a long time after inactivity, but I am not sure if
this is a low power mode that will not wear things out. Second, are these
things somewhat noisy? Specifically, during scans it sounds as though the
Twin Dwarves of Enfan Island were calling up Mothra. "Ooh-ee, ah-woo..." Do
they all do this? Is it a lubrication question, and if so is the unit
user-accessible to lube it up? Thirdly, it seems to require a bit of force
to get the carrier to slide in and engage. The manual is useless on this
point, of course, but I wonder if there is a trick I am missing. Lastly, is
there a way to shut the "front door" to keep out dust?
Many thanks,
Les
