Hmm, I think the instant analog gain preview is only if you make a small
adjustment, or make an adjustment that the data in memory can accommodate.
Alternatively, now I think about it, it might be dependent on the exposure
of the frame (on the film, itself) versus the absolute exposure.
E.g. say the average neg exposure counts as "0" and coupled with that the
average scan exposure is "0". Now if you have an under exposed frame, say
-1, the scan exposure might be compensated automatically by the Scanner AE,
e.g. +1.
When you fiddle with the master gain, say increasing it by 0.5, with the
normal frame you might find that the scan held in memory accommodates the
+0.5 shift in exposure.
But, when you try the same for the under-exposed frame, the data in memory
doesn't allow for the adjustment without re-scanning.
Well, that's my theory...
Put another way: I've noticed in the past that NS was inconsistent in this
regard, and with 4, so far, it has re-scanned each time I adjusted master
gain. The test frame was under-exposed, as far as I could tell (this frame
also scans, at default, with a huge cyan colour cast, which is why I was
using analog gain control in the first place!). This frame scanned with the
same cast under NS 3.1.2.
I noticed a small change in the ICE cleanup of a scratch in a test frame,
but it seemed mildly worse than before...
I noticed GEM has more notches on the slider, but I'm now convinced that
Neat Image is the way to go, leaving GEM off.
