1. Buy a Umax Powerlook 2 or later off eBay - mine cost £70 there. It has a
10x8 film hood, was £1k+ new but is too low res to be much use now. Be
careful you don't buy one with a shagged power supply, they blow if left on
24/7.
2. Pull apart your old Paterson contact frame for the film size you want to
use, all you want is the glass complete with the film mask/retainer.
Extract the plastic hinge pins, then prise the plastic lump off the glass
plate. It's stuck on with d/s tape, be gentle. Run white spirit into the
gap and leave overnight to soften if it's resistant. Clean off adhesive
residue with white spirit.
3. Replace the Powerlook's lid mounting-plate screws with motherboard
stand-off's with the same thread, replace the mount plate on top. This
means the scanner can now accept the sheet of 4mm glass from the Paterson
frame.
4. Use it. I use Vuescan for colour neg and B&W, results are
better/quicker/cheaper than darkroom contacts anyday.
It's probably possible to adapt other similar scanners with a 10x8 film
lid, like some of the Agfa's. Microteks tend to have a 10x8" drawer, I
dunno about them. I've been told they can handle 4mm glass but caveat
emptor.
