The slides are in poor condition but many thanks for the web address.
The slides are not good enough, nor the end purpose sufficient, to
justify investing in a much more expensive scanner.
I am amazed that in the same batch of slides the dense slides are still
dense, but other slides are seriously washed out.
Could the dense slides be projected and digitally photographed to any
serviceable extent? What would be best to project
On to etc? Has anyone been down this path? Any views chaps? I am not
thinking of serious quality, only to make the best of the slides for
family gathering use. The darkness of so many slides is a problem.

Are you saying that the slides have poor definition, or that the slides
are sharp and the scans have poor definition?
If the latter, have you checked that the mirror is clean? A dusty mirror
on a Nikon LS-30 or LS-2000 can degrade the scan noticeably.
There are instructions for opening up and cleaning here...
...but you can do the essential mirror cleaning without removing the
case.
