They are microscopic, you'd need a pretty high power (50X) magnifier to
see them.

I can't explain the light path, the light pipes are probably for
illumination, not image.

The loose construction may be so that they could align out a wide range
of manufacturing slop and lock it down with the screws.  The truth is
with good software, all you need the scanner to be is repeatable.  You
can calibrate the position by scanning a target.  Once you do, the
stepper motors take over the positioning.
