I don't have a 5400 II, so I know you aren't directing this to me. The
scanner has received very good reviews in many areas.
I looked at your linked images, and just guessing, I would agree with
your analysis that the neg carrier's teeth probably are shallow enough
that they are not engaging fully with the drive gear, which may have
become slightly worn from use.
Two things come to mind:
1) if the neg holder worked when the scanner was new, then either the
drive gear or the carrier teeth or both are wearing, and probably will
continue to do so. That could eventually lead to the slide carrier also
slipping. Further, the fact that the teeth on the slide carrier are
longer and deeper may mean it is wearing the drive gear more rapidly.
2) The causes could be use of too soft a plastic on the driver gear,
causing slippage or wear, or too much play in the gear shaft (it might
be spring loaded). Or it could just be the tolerances need to be
tightened up or maybe the neg carrier was molded incorrectly, but it
obviously worked previously with those same teeth.
I suggest that you contact Konica-Minolta about this. They may have
newer versions which corrected the problem.
