It's often helpful to first change to LAB, and then apply Colin's 'S' curve
correction in the L channel only - that way the colors won't be modified.

After you have levels adjusted to your satisfaction, just apply some 'S'
correction in Curves. Clamp the mid-point and drag the levels below that
down and the levels above the mid-point up, until you have the desired
amount of punch in the image.
