The filmstrip adapter (model SA-21) for the Nikon LS4000ED  moves the 
film by pinching it between motor-driven rubber rollers about 3/8 of 
an inch wide down the center of the filmstrip.  I feel certain that 
if there's grit on these rollers it will scratch the film, although I 
haven't used mine enough yet for them to get dirty.
