Me too on a system W98 SE ... not any more NikonScan ...
Please check the SCSI drivers because I have found particularly sensitive
the SCSI process ... in particular Windoze doesn't like to have SCSI devices
switched in AFTER the boot !
SO if you plan to use your scanner ... switch that BEFORE the system so to
let the SCSI card recognizing it BEFORE the Operating System boot.

I've had my LS-30 on two systems (win95 and win98) without Nikon Scan.
Never installed it; I use only Vuescan. I did install scsi drivers for the
scsi card, and Ed provided a vuescan inf file that eliminated the
unrecognized/new hardware cycle.
