I experienced something very similar when trying to operate a Minolta Scan
Multi and a Umax PowerLook II on the same SCSI chain along with some other
devices. The flatbed Umax was very picky about where it came in the
physical cable chain, insisting on being before the Minolta no matter what
the SCSI IDs that were given them. Some other devices could be before the
Umax without problem; but others had to come after.

Laurie:
You hit the nail on the head here!
After my last post, I switched the positions of the two items on the
chain (both scanners; one a flatbed and the other film) and now
everything works perfectly.
