There's a static charge on the screen surface that can attract dust (for
CRTs, at least), although that isn't much of a problem except over long
intervals (such as every few months or more).

I think the main problem, though, is that many people cannot resist touching
the screen, which makes it very dirty in very short order.  When I share a
work area with others, I practically have to slap their hands to keep their
fingers off my screen.  Fingerprints gather dust and dirt very quickly and
you end up constantly cleaning the screen.

I haven't yet seen a dirty LCD screen.  Also, I have some qualms about
cleaning such a soft surface.  Sometimes pressing on a LCD screen will
damage pixels, which remain forever "hot" or "cold" thereafter.
