[filmscanners] RE: large scanning project
Hi everybody!
I second Art's suggestion of running a separate computer with a compatable
OS on it to use older drivers. I actually have several computers that I
use for various tasks: one for Photoshop, one for digital audio, another for
electronics CAD, and another general purpose "internet" computer (they're
all hooked to the internet now!)
A similar idea is to use external removable hard drives, that can be booted
with the OS desired for the activity to be done. This way you could have a
single computer, but run an external USB drive for each task/OS. I do the
separate computer route, as I have a hard time parting with my old hardware,
and this way, my wife and I can be occupying ourselvs on separate computers,
but in the same room, so we're together but able to do our own thing, too!
My two cents, anyway....

Keep in mind you are speaking about two different Polaroids. The one
which existed as a corporation, and the "new" Polaroid which is a brand
name, often sold to the highest bidder, and run by a group of venture
capitalists, just like "Memorex" is.
It is indeed a sad state of affairs that this is what Polaroid has
become. You can now buy Polaroid light bulbs, made by a Chinese company
which has nothing to do with Polaroid and who just buys the use of the
logo and name. Polaroid now has a retail website where they sell a
bunch of retail high tech, including many other brands.
Corel went through the same process, and is just now emerging as a
public company again.
The only hope is that perhaps Microtek will release drivers that work,
since they manufactured the products to begin with. Another option,
with the cost of computers so low, is to literally run a dedicated
computer with the scanner running XP, and use a network to move things
around as needed.
