One other thought on your S20 problems. If patterns in the shadow areas of
slide scans has recently increased, you might have an ElectroMagnetic
Interference problem. Any change to your configuration, particularly power
supply or rerouting cables could introduce changes to this old problem. Try
scanning some negatives, you might like the results better.

I've been scanning mostly slide strips. I've always had problems in the dark
areas in the form of greenish stripes (which BTW seems to be a major flaw of
this scanner according to what I've read), but recently these stripes became
more obvious. That's why I decided to recalibrate the scanner. But if the
scanner is self calibrating, than the problem has to be something else.
